General Description/Primary Purpose:

Develop, implement, and maintain a creative program of public information and public relations that will enhance the college's public image, marketing, and recruitment efforts. Act as the key spokesperson to local, state, and national media. Work in a collaborative environment to provide accurate information on sensitive, confidential, and high-impact issues to the institution.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Identify, develop, and implement a comprehensive plan to communicate the mission, vision, and values of Murray State College via print media, billboards, and press releases.
  2. Develop and maintain relationships with media outlets in and outside the service area.
  3. Coordinate publicity requests and scheduling of announcements to media outlets and campus stakeholders via the Campus Shield app.
  4. Work with the Director of Marketing & Development to tell the stories of students, faculty, staff, and alumni and the generational change made available through the power of higher education.
  5. Submit timely reports and media announcements to the OSRHE.
  6. Assist with the maintenance of external pages that mention Murray State College; OSRHE, chambers of commerce, etc.
  7. Provide needed support to the President and cabinet members, including but not limited to: writing speeches, taking photographs, and assisting with special events.
  8. Maintain and update commencement and other regular annual speeches.
  9. Identify, develop, and implement comprehensive college brand standards and the college crisis communication plan.
  10. Maintain the budget and keep an inventory of branded items for use by the President; lapel pins, ink pens, hats, cups, etc.
  11. Ensure all college-related materials, documents, and installations are on-brand.
  12. Assist with copyreading of all printed pieces released for mass distribution.
  13. Maintain the online campus calendar.
  14. Coordinate open records requests and research as needed.
  15. Act as the primary college photographer and coordinate scheduling for support as needed.
  16. Maintain the budget and oversee the staff and goals of the Media Center.
  17. Other duties may be assigned.
  18. To meet objectives of virtual work-related situations and/or extended periods when working from home all faculty and staff must have access to 24/7 reliable off-campus Internet.
  19. Maintain NIMS training as required, including the IS-700.a and IS-100.HE tests
  20. Complete all training assigned by the Human Resources Department.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the essential job functions can be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, by using some other combination of skills and abilities.


  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Design Programs and digital photography
  • Excellent writing, grammar, and punctuation skills.
  • Basic understanding of academics.

Other Ergonomic Requirements:

In performing job functions related to assigned duties, some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying, and other movements may be required. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without a significant risk of injury to themselves or others or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions of the job.
Hours:

Monday- Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday, 8:00 a.m.- 12 noon (37.5 hour work week). Other professional activities can be scheduled in accordance with college policy and in cooperation with the supervisor.
Qualification Standards:
  1. Minimum Educational Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, or marketing.
  2. Preferred Experience: 3 years of experience in public relations, marketing, communications, media relations, social media, community outreach, event promotion, writing press releases, creating public-facing materials, and managing organizational messaging.
  3. Professionalism: Members of the Murray State College staff are expected to show professional competence, integrity, and enthusiasm in the performance of all responsibilities.
  4. Image: Murray State College employees are expected to maintain a neat, well-groomed, and professional image at all times while performing their responsibilities.
  5. Background Check: The successful candidate must give permission to have a formal background check conducted and employment is contingent upon the results of the national criminal and sex offender background check
